What’s Your Zodiac Wine Pairing?

If you’re anything like me, trying to choose a wine can feel like you’re a kid in a candy shop, surrounded by too many good options without any idea of how to narrow down to the perfect pick. Do you want a red or a white? Light or medium-bodied? Are you looking for fruity flavors or earthy? Should you go for a dry wine or something on the sweeter side?

Instead of laboring over all the different choices, why not let the stars decide? Keep reading to find out which wine I would serve you based on your zodiac sign.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 19) – Cabernet Sauvignon

Aries are known for their fiery, take-charge attitude, making the bold and assertive Cabernet Sauvignon your perfect wine pairing. Just as Aries embraces challenges head-on, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have thick skin which allows them to grow across the globe, from France to the United States and even as far south as Australia and Chile. Different terroirs, soils, and climates will evoke different qualities, but no matter the region, you’ll experience a rich, full-bodied wine with enticing flavors of dark fruit and earthy notes that will leave you wanting more.

TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20) – Merlot

Stable and dependable Taurus will gravitate towards Merlot for its ability to maintain a soft texture and fruity flavors across regions. While the profile may vary slightly, you can always expect to find notes of red berries on the nose, smooth tannins on the palate, and undertones of chocolate and vanilla (is your mouth watering yet, Taurus?). Merlot is also a classic cooking wine, and pairs well with a variety of dishes from pizza to filet mignon, making it all the more suitable for Taurus’ indulgent tendencies.

GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20) – Sauvignon Blanc

Fueled by child-like curiosity and intelligent conversations, Gemini’s wine pairing – Sauvignon Blanc – caters to their eclectic tastes. This wine is made all over the world and presents a myriad of expressions, from refreshing citrus to complex herbaceous flavors like jalapeño, bell pepper, and basil. This wine also pairs well with several different foods, complementing Gemini’s desire to always find new experiences. This is the perfect bottle to keep on hand for a night out with friends or a night in with your favorite takeout.

CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Much like Cancers, who are known for their deep emotional sensitivity and unwavering loyalty, Zinfandel offers a sense of warmth and familiarity that feels like a comforting hug in a glass. A sweet, jammy, and fruit-forward wine with layered spicy aromas, Zinfandel is the perfect companion for Cancer’s favorite pastime: enjoying cozy gatherings and cherishing intimate moments with loved ones. And don’t miss out on the light-bodied, sweeter version of this wine, a White Zinfandel (which is actually more of a rosé).

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Leo meets its vinous counterpart in the vibrant and expressive Viognier. Viognier is a rare white grape that needs plenty of heat and sunshine to fully ripen, making this wine an ideal match for the sun-ruled Leo. Expect to be drawn in by the decadent qualities of Viognier, which often boast luscious notes of peach, apricot, and even honeysuckle along with exotic spices and subtle hints of vanilla. Together, Leo and a bottle of Viognier are sure to leave an unforgettable impression while making every moment a celebration.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Virgo’s wine pairing is none other than Spain’s signature Tempranillo. Just as Virgos meticulously plan and organize every aspect of their lives, Tempranillo wines stand out for their precision and structure. Virgos, who are often described as earthy and practical, will appreciate the tasting notes of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs that Tempranillo wines often exhibit. Both Virgos and Tempranillo effortlessly command attention through their quiet elegance and sophistication.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22)

Libra is well-balanced and adept at understanding all sides of a conflict. Your clear pairing has to be Sangiovese, commonly known by other names like Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, or Prugnolo Gentile, just to name a few. Nicknamed the “chameleon grape” by winemakers, Sangiovese-based wines can easily take on their winemaker’s style and the qualities of their environment. The best of these wines will be medium-bodied with a perfect balance of fruity and earthy profiles, making it a natural pairing for those who seek harmony in both wine and life.

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21)

One word to describe Scorpio and Syrah: intense. Scorpio is the enigma of the zodiac, and their mysterious and hard-to-read personality is uniquely reflected in Syrah. This wine (also known as Shiraz in Australia) is one of the darkest red wines in the world and is easily distinguished by its opaque, deep purple color and seductive aromas. On first taste, Syrah presents with a burst of dark fruit flavors that settle on the palate for a subtle spicy, peppery finish. This front-loaded style mirrors Scorpio’s ability to strike quickly and leave a lasting impression.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Both a warrior and poet, Sagittarius and Pinot Noir are like kindred spirits. This prized yet delicate grape challenges even the most skilled winemakers – but as every Sagittarius knows, great challenges reap great rewards. Pinot Noir has a distinct profile influenced by aroma compounds called esters. When successfully harvested and vinified, esters give Pinot Noir a breadth of flavors from cherry and raspberry to vanilla and smoke. Each sip of this wine unearths a new layer of complexity, reflecting the multifaceted character of the grape while complementing the adventure-seeking spirit of Sagittarius.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

For the determined and ambitious Capricorn, there is no better pairing than Grenache. This grape has a reputation for producing some of the most delicious and expensive wines, matching Capricorns’ tireless drive for success and perfectionist tendencies. When you uncork your bottle, you can expect to be met with aromas of orange rind and red berries combined with intense flavors of strawberry, grilled plum, and cinnamon, all coming together to create an unforgettable sensory experience.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Aquarians, known for their originality and forward-thinking ideas, need a wine that embodies their rebellious streak. And they’ll find it in a Petit Verdot. The innovative and unconventional nature of Aquarius is perfectly complemented by the bold and distinctive qualities of this wine. Traditionally used as a blending grape in France, Petit Verdot can also produce stunning single-variety wines when harvested in warmer climates like California, Australia, or Spain. Aquarians, who strive for individuality, will find value in the paradoxical rich but light, fruity-yet-floral profile of this wine.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Dreamy and intuitive Pisces who are attuned to the subtle nuances of human emotion will enjoy Chardonnay’s wide range of expressions. From crisp and refreshing to rich and buttery, this wine caters to a variety of palates and preferences. Termed the “winemaker’s grape,” Chardonnay reflects its terroir and winemaker’s style, mirroring Pisces’ ability to absorb and adapt to the energies surrounding them. Whichever bottle you choose, Chardonnay is sure to offer a complex and vibrant tasting experience.
